You are still praying. You stand, you say the words, you finish, and it feels the same as before you started. Qur'an that used to move you now reads like print on a page. Somewhere in there a fear has started: maybe the faith has already left, and you are only going through the motions.
If that is where you are, you are in good company. Some of the best people of this ummah felt exactly this, and took it straight to the Prophet ﷺ. Here is what he told them, what the Sunnah says about faith that wears thin, and what to do in a dry season.
Hanzalah and Abu Bakr felt it too
A companion called Hanzalah, may Allah be pleased with him, came to believe he had become a hypocrite. His reason was that when he sat with the Prophet ﷺ he felt everything. When he went home to his family and his work, it faded.
He told Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and Abu Bakr said he felt the same thing. Abu Bakr. The two of them went to the Prophet ﷺ together. He told them that if they stayed in that state all the time, the angels would greet them in their streets, but that there is a time for this and a time for that. The narration is in Sahih Muslim 2750.
He did not scold them, and he did not agree that they were hypocrites. He told them that the rise and fall was expected. Faith that feels vivid in one hour and ordinary in the next is how it works for human beings.
Faith wears thin, and can be renewed
There is a narration, recorded by al-Hakim and graded hasan, that faith wears out in the heart the way a garment wears out, so ask Allah to renew the faith in your hearts.
Look at what it does not say. It does not say faith disappears, and it does not say that wearing thin is a sign of a bad person. It says it wears, the way clothes you use every day wear. And the instruction that comes with it is to ask Allah for renewal. Which means renewal was expected to be needed, more than once, by ordinary believers.
Your heart is not stuck
The Prophet ﷺ used to ask Allah to keep his heart steady, and he explained that the hearts are between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful, and He turns them as He wills (Sahih Muslim 2654).
That can sound frightening at first. It is also the most hopeful thing you can hear in a dry season. If hearts can be turned, then yours can be turned toward Him again. That is the whole reason to ask.
The Qur'an gives a du'a for exactly this:
"[Who say], 'Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.'"
Surah Ali 'Imran 3:8
What to do while it is dry
The biggest risk in a season like this is not the lack of feeling. It is stopping. The temptation is to wait until you feel something before you pray properly again, and that wait can run for months or years.
- Keep turning up to the prayer while it feels empty. A prayer offered by someone who feels nothing and prays anyway is not a lesser prayer.
- Ask Allah plainly, in your own words, to renew your faith and keep your heart firm.
- Make the du'a of Surah Ali 'Imran 3:8 part of your day.
- Keep a small, honest amount of Qur'an and dhikr going. A few lines read with attention is more than nothing.
- Be around people who remind you of Allah without making you feel judged.
Do not try to force a feeling. The season tends to pass on its own schedule, not on your effort, and the people it passes for are the ones still standing there when it does.
If it has been longer than a season
Some people are not in a dry patch so much as a long absence. They drifted, stopped praying, and now feel they have been away too long to just come back.
There is a hadith qudsi for that feeling. Allah says: I am as My servant thinks of Me. Whoever draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length. Whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running (Sahih al-Bukhari 7405, Sahih Muslim 2675).
You take one small step back, and He does not wait at the far end with folded arms. Think well of Him, and take the step.
A note on low mood
Sometimes numbness in worship is part of something wider, such as depression, burnout or grief, where nothing feels like much. If the flatness is everywhere in your life, not only in your prayer, please speak to a doctor as well as a scholar you trust. That is not a sign your faith has failed.
Listen in Still Heart
Still Heart has a session called When Faith Goes Quiet, about seven minutes, for the season when you are still praying but nothing seems to land. It tells the story of Hanzalah and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them, and asks for a heart held steady, without blaming you for the dryness or promising when it will lift. If it has been longer than a season, The Way Back is for returning after time away. It begins with mercy, asks for no accounting of what came before, and rests on Astaghfirullah and La ilaha illa Allah.
